NABBA Mr Universe Contest

by Kay Bolivar

ONCE AGAIN the 1977 NABBA Mr. Universe Contest (amateur and professional) provided some exciting competition. For the first time since 1957, both contests were won by British entries.

Copping the Amateur contest was Bertil Fox. His size and shape were particularly impressive although he did tend a little towards overdevelopment.

Jim Morris, the 1973 Mr. America, is 43 years old now but he has really maintained his physique and came in a close second. In fact, it was so close that many thought he should have won.

Dave Johns, the current Mr. America, looked much better than his 6th place finish would lead one to believe. He was a bit smooth, however, and definition is extremely important in Europe.

Kozo Sudo of Japan won the Best Poser award. Although he was last year's runner-up, he failed to place in the top six this year. Such are the changing fortunes on the bodybuilding scene.

In the Pros, Tony Emmott edged Serge Nubret of France out of 1st place by one point. Nubret, the defending title holder, took the loss well...he's a real sportsman. Both men are 39!

Steve Davis of the United States was very symmetrical and athletic looking and finished in 3rd place. Warren Frederick and Don Ross, also from the States, came in 4th and 5th respectively although they were somewhat outclassed in their posing artistry by the top three.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the multiple past winners, presented the trophies to the winner, and received a very warm welcome on his return to London where he once garnered four Universe titles. Only Bill Pearl can equal this record.

Arnold's appearance and reception was a fitting ending to the 29th NABBA Mr. Universe Show.

PHOTO CAPTIONS

- An impressive muscular pose of Bertil Fox. This fine pose gives ample evidence of his overall development, with fine proportions to give good balance to his muscular physique.

- The man who organizes the NABBA Universe contests, Oscar Heidenstam (left) and, president of NABBA. He travels around Great Britain and Europe to attend many shows, and is a very dedicated worker in this field. He's giving Steve Davis, USA, some friendly advice.

- Serge Nubret with NABBA reporter, Kay Bolivar. Nubret is sponsoring a super physique show in Paris on November 5th and featuring many of the top USA physique starts, such as Oliva, Grant, Adrian and several others. Nubret, who remains in fantastic shape, has been extremely busy so was unable to train as he'd like for the NABBA contest, but feels he will do better next time.

- Tony Emmott displays the impressive physique that won for him the professional Mr. Universe crown this year. Tony has been training for some years now and has finally reached the goal he's been dogmatically striving towards the Mr. Universe title! Congratulations, Tony.
